Prep Time 1 hour 45 minutes
Cook Time 50 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 35 minutes
Servings 2 1 pound loaves

Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 oz pkt active dry yeast Equals 2 Tbsp + 3/4 tsp of dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 tbsp sugar + 1 tsp 1 tsp added to yeast mixture
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp butter, softened
  • 2 cups milk, scalded
  • 6 cups flour, sifted Adjust amount as needed for proper dough consistency

Instructions

  • Add yeast to lukewarm water and 1 teaspoon sugar. Let stand about 5 minutes to activate yeast.
  • Combine salt, butter, remaining sugar and add milk. Cool to lukewarm. Add softened yeast and 3 cups flour. Beat well. Add more flour until just enough to make a soft dough. Place remaining flour on board and turn out dough on floured board. Knead until smooth and elastic.

  • Remove dough from greased bowl and place on floured surface. Cut dough into halves and round into balls. Cover and let stand 10 minutes. Shape into loaves and place in greased loaf pans. Grease tops with butter or olive oil. Cover with a cloth and let rise until doubled in bulk.
  • Bake in preheated 400 degree F oven for 10 minutes. Reduce temperature to 375 degrees F and bake 35-40 minutes longer.
